'He's excelling' - Joseph Duffy receives Rory MacDonald's seal of approval

The Irish lightweight meets Dustin Poirier in UFC Dublin’s main event at the 3Arena on 24 October.

Joseph Duffy On the Fly

THE UFC’S RETURN to Dublin is just over a week away, when Ireland’s Joseph Duffy will face Dustin Poirier in the headline bout.

Donegal man Duffy has been training hard at the famous Tristar Gym in Montreal, where the likes of Georges St-Pierre and Rory MacDonald have called home.

In the first episode of a new ‘On the Fly’ series, the 27-year-old works up a sweat with some shark tank sparring and shows us around his digs.

MacDonald said: “Joe is super dedicated. He’s focused, he’s training hard, he’s pushing through the tough times and he’s excelling when he’s feeling good. He’s really grinding right now and he’s going to show up on fight night.”

The Ufc are really taking the Irish fans for granted. In not over stating it when I say its the worst card on paper in history. Not one top ten guy on the bill after Stipe dropped out. I’m looking forward to Duffy V Porier but Parke is now the co-main after 2 losses against a guy coming back off a drugs ban. #shortchanged.

I get what you’re saying but there was no top 10 guys on the card last time out either and what a card that turned out to be!! The cards are diluted across the board now and fight pass cards are a stepping stone to the ppv’s. I think there was time to replace Stipe but what would you do in that instance, pocket the extra cash with no repercussions? I personally would like these cards to be 10 irish guys getting an opportunity, against anyone, and see how they get on. You don’t need stars for good fights.

Tyrone Spong and Matt Mitrione offered to step in for Miocic and I would have loved to see those guys in action. I like to entertaining Irish fighters on the card too like Duffy and Seery but the UFC salaries are quite small when compared to boxing for instance and a couple of marquee names on the bill would have been better. They were all queuing up to fight in Dublin after the last card. There’s always a chance all if the fights could be barnstormers but I still feel the ufc is being greedy when they know the event will sell out in minutes regardless of who’s on the card.

Non Europeans can’t get a visa in time so that’s Mitrione out. Sponge is European but isn’t signed to UFC and he has a WSOF fight scheduled so I doubt that could happen.

He has a non exclusive contract with WSOF and that fight was only confirmed yesterday.

Ciaran I agree 100% with u. We are getting taken for idiots. I paid 150 a ticket for this event. Don’t get me wrong I’m still looking forward to the event. Duffy and poirier is gonna be a good fight. But the new co main event shouldn’t be the co. I was at the last event too. Just think Dana could’ve replaced the co main event
