Michael Lyster took immediate offence to Brolly's comparison. RTE Player Screen grab

Having condemned sledging, Joe Brolly might just have crossed the line on The Sunday Game

The outspoken pundit later apologised for his comments.

HE WAS ON air for barely a minute before causing a stir but Joe Brolly may have just crossed the line on this occasion.

Ahead of Cavan’s Ulster football championship clash against Monaghan this afternoon, Brolly appeared on The Sunday Game alongside Tomas O Se and presenter Michael Lyster.

When asked by Lyster about Cavan’s style of play, Brolly made a comparison between it and RTÉ reporter Marty Morrissey.

“We’re starting to get used to it,” Brolly said of Cavan’s blanket defence approach. “I suppose in a way we’re just starting to live with it.

“I’ve referred to Cavan in recent years as the Black Death because the football has been as some people have said, as ugly as Marty Morrissey.”

The former All-Ireland winner’s comments stunned Lyster with the presenter forcing Brolly to apologise immediately.

“No, no, no,” was Lyster’s response.

“I should apologise to the people of Cavan,” Brolly added.

“Apologise to Marty Morrissey for a start,” Lyster then responded.

At half-time, Brolly then apologised to his colleague on air by saying ‘it was said in the spirit of affection and not meant literally.’

“Well I presume that’s an apology,” Lyster said. “We appreciate that because it was out of order, Joe”.
