Ex-Leinster man Gopperth's brilliant form earns him new Wasps deal

The 33-year-old is the Premiership’s top points scorer.

JIMMY GOPPERTH’S SENSATIONAL start to the Aviva Premiership season has been rewarded with a new contract at Wasps.

The 33-year-old has been in explosive form in the opening weeks of the campaign and is currently the league’s top points scorer having chalked up 90 in the first six games.

Gopperth, who left Leinster for the English outfit after the end of the 2014/15 season, joins Dan Robson, Thomas Young and Kearnan Myall in putting pen-to-paper on a new deal at the Ricoh Arena.

The Kiwi out-half has largely operated at inside centre this term and has already scored three tries with Wasps sitting second in the Premiership table.

“The way the club’s going and the direction we’re moving in as a squad, the quality of players and coaching staff we have, it’s just a great fit,” he said.

“I’ve really enjoyed myself the last couple of years, especially this year, and I’m loving my rugby playing alongside a great bunch of guys, so why not continue it?

“I believe there’s a lot still to come from this squad. We’ve been learning our ways and making good progress, but I feel there’s more to come.

“We obviously have a few more people to come in which will help our cause, but we’re just looking to improve every single week. We’re on the right track but we’ve still got plenty to learn.”

After a fine start to the domestic season, Gopperth will be hoping to transfer that form onto the European stage when Wasps get their campaign underway against Zebre this weekend. They are in Pool 2 alongside Connacht and Toulouse.
