LEGENDARY IRISH AUSSIES rules footballer Jim Stynes has been remembered by his former club Melbourne FC with a statue.
The Dubliner, who joined the club as a teenager before going on to make 264 appearances during a glittering career, passed away in March 2012 after a long battle with cancer. After his playing days, Stynes also spent time as assistant coach and club president.
Today, the club unveiled the one-and-a-half times life-sized bronze sculpture outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“Jimmy was a man of great dignity, a man who was selfless in what he achieved, who gave so much back to not only football… It’s a remarkable story,” said former team-mate Lyon.
