Jim Stynes dies following long battle with cancer

The AFL legend is understood to have passed away in a ‘pain free, dignified and peaceful’ manner.

JIM STYNES HAS died at the age of 45 after a long battle with cancer, it has been announced.

The AFL legend had been fighting the disease since the diagnosis was made two and a half years ago, and is understood to have passed away in a ‘pain free, dignified and peaceful’ manner.

Stynes’ wife, Sam, posted a message on the Jimbo Super Muesli Facebook page, thanking fans for their messages of support. It read:

“In his final days Jim was immersed with insurmountable love and tenderness surrounded by his family and some close friends in the comfort of his own home.

“On behalf of Jim my heartfelt thanks to all those who have so generously cared for, guided and supported Jim throughout his challenging cancer battle.”

The Irishman gained legendary status in Aussie Rules circles, after becoming the first non-Australian player to claim the Brownlow Medal, having previously made the switch from GAA as part of the ‘Irish Experiment’.

@DavidCarolan16: how selfish she was. She only gave 20 odd years unpaid to Mayo and numerous all Irelands before eventually walking out on Mayo in her late thirties. Very very selfish.

@DavidCarolan16: when a Cork hurler strikes, its Frank Murphy’s fault. When Limerick hurlers, who’d never won anything despite the support of one of Ireland’s richest men, strike, its their manager’s fault. But when the greatest footballer in the history of women’s sport in Ireland (along with a host of teammates) complains about the conditions, all her accomplishments are forgotten.
