AFTER 21 YEARS as the man widely regarded as the voice of wrestling, legendary commentator Jim Ross has announced his retirement from the WWE.

A cult favourite and the creator of several memorable phrases such as “somebody stop the goddamn match,” he has long since earned a special affinity with most wrestling fans.

‘Good Ol’ JR’s chemistry with heel commentator Jerry ‘The King’ Lawlor has been much celebrated over the years, consequently enabling both to enjoy a level of popularity on a par with wrestling’s top stars.

The 62-year-old confirmed the news on Twitter, saying:

“Tomorrow is my last, legal day w/ @WWE It was a great 21 year run. Best biz decision ever was coming to WWE ’93. Grateful to all involved.”

His role in the WWE has been significantly reduced in recent times, allegedly in part as a result of his role in the now-infamous WWE 2K14 panel event, during which legendary wrestler Ric Flair appeared to be drunk.

Ross is not set to disappear from public life completely however, as he still runs a popular wrestling podcast in addition to selling an array of successful barbecue sauces.
