FORMER CHELSEA GOALKEEPER Carlo Cudicini was left highly impressed by the motivational speech given by Jim McGuinness at an FAI Pro-Licence course yesterday.
McGuinness led Donegal to two All-Ireland finals in three years, winning the 2012 final, and is well-known for his inspirational team-talks and fine motivational skills.
Cudicini, who is also obtaining his coaching badges, took to Twitter to express his admiration for the Donegal man.
McGuinness has been working with Celtic for over two years now and he has ambitions of furthering his career in soccer management as he gets his Uefa coaching badges. He is highly thought of over in Parkhead since he took on the role of performance consultant on a part-time basis in 2012.
The former Donegal manager even had a hand to play in Europe’s success in the Ryder Cup last year as captain Paul McGinley brought him on board to give him advice.
Despite having no relative background in soccer, it is thought that McGuinness could go far in the game as a manager once he obtains his Uefa badges.
Complements are flying at Jimmy today. He’s in Darragh O Sé’s examiner column today as well.
How come Mick O Dwyer never got as much praise as Jim Mcguiness.8 All Ireland medals as coach and 4 as a player. His teams played the most beautiful brand of football the game has seen and he proved his worth also on the modern game leading Kildare to a Leinster and All Ireland final and Laois to two Leinster finals winning one not to mention the great job he did in Wicklow…I’m sure Jim Mguiness is a great motivator which should be automatic for any top manager you would think but the brand of football his Donegal team played will not be remembered fondly
anyone who knows anything about football wouldn’t put mcguinness in the same sentence as the great mick o Dwyer your correct tj.
Different time. Recognition would have been significantly more for O’Dwyer were he at his prime in social media era. Although McGuinness gets so much attention as he is a fascinating character, highly educated and is now plying his trade in a different sport. Interesting to see where his career goes.
O’Dwyer was/is a fantastic manager, and no-one will be troubling his haul of All-Ireland winning teams soon. There are also many, many books and documentaries on his Kerry sides of the 1970s and 80s, where he gets due recognition for his achievements.
But he did have some of the greatest players ever to throw on a green and gold geansaí at his disposal, whereas McGuinness had to mould a team that had been hammered out the gate several times on the big day. I’m not saying necessarily that JMcG’s achievements are better or worse, but he was definitely coming from a low base, which is probably why people celebrate his achievements in the way they do.
TJ if you can’t figure out the differences between the 2 and what they do then what hope is there?! I wouldn’t fancy Micko giving a power point presentation on how he would win an All Ireland in the modern era, would you? Micko was a good coach 20, 30 years ago and got plenty of credit for it.
Well John I’m just basically trying to say that the praise for Jim is way over the top and excellent coaches like Jim Gavin and The like who played the game in the right manner and are more successful don’t get half the praise.Mick O Dwyer also did it in the modern game if you remember worked wonders with Laois and Kildare and look how far they fell away after he left same with Wicklow.Ive no problem with Jim Mcguiness I just think the praise is way over the top
True, gavin has won 6 out of 7 titles along with u21 titles beating jims donegal u21.jim was also got beaten out the gate by horans mayo and got outwitted by fitzmaurice kerry.good manager is all.
You see TJ people find it hard to appreciate a defensive style. It is all very well saying other coaches play a great brand but last year Jim Gavin went out with the great brand and a great squad and got turned over by a brilliant Donegal gameplan. The problem isn’t Donegal and the style they played , the problem is crap teams trying to copy them. And Micko did a good job in Kildare, you may be overhyping his tenure in Laois, his time had passed at that stage. He was brought into Wicklow as a big name to give the players a boost, his coaching style had passed it’s sell by date by then. Football has changed a lot since the good old days. On a seperate note, the games that were played back in the 70′s and 80′s were not great at all to watch, we seem to get annoyed at defensive games and start harping on about the good old days, we need to strike a balance. Finally, Jim Mc had no leaving cert, went back and did it in his 20′s, then did his psychology degree and took over a Donegal team who were a mess mentally and turned them into champions. He then got a full time job paying over 150k a year and now works with the Celtic first team. I’m sure some of his methods could be questioned but he didn’t get to where he is by accident.
Pat gilroys dubs got beaten by kerry in 2009 by 19 points 2 years later he beat them in the final beating jims team along the way.He is a great motivator too I know that personally but nobody ever mentions his achievments on the other hand jims achievments are on a par but every other gaa article i read is celebrating jim.he is a good manager just overhyped by the media and I dont think what he earns is relevant.
A Gaa manager switches codes and gets a job with a professional sport earning big money, hence the relevance. Gavin is a good manager too, can we not just celebrate people’s success instead of questioning it?
Fair play to the guy on his career its not relevant to his time at donegal neither is any other managers careers outside GAA.
Deco are you actually serious? He was brought over to Celtic as a guest speaker during his time as Donegal manager, he never would have got the chance only for the waves he made as Donegal manager, therefore of course it is relevant. They liked him and he did part time work with them and now works full time. How could it not be relevant?
Well actually Tyrone created the defensive system and Donegal copied them
Actually Armagh first Oran!
I said his career since his time in donegal is not relevant to his time at donegal not the other way around . He won one all ireland with a group of very good players including one of the best in the country m.murphy.this is a similar achievment to most of the other managers who have done the same.mickey harte did it 3 times so in terms of achievment he is well ahead IMO.The GAA media see him as some kind of genius which he is not .when he won some big games the media said he is a genius when he lost some big games the players were blamed you cant have it both ways .other managers in recent times have been as sucessfull if not more sucessfull in there careers since IC Mngmt . He was a successfull IC manager lets leave it at that.
Just what the world needs, another Jose Mourinho.
