JASON SMYTH MATCHED the stunning double gold medal achievement of Michael McKillop at the IPC World Championships in Lyon.
Ireland’s Paralympic double sprint champion captured the 100m title with a powerful run of 10.61 that left his opponents trailing.
The Derry native created a championship record with his blistering running as he went 0.11 faster than the time he set in the 100m T13 semi-finals. He burst from the starters’ blocks and the race looked a forgone conclusion after just 40 metres.
Smyth never let up the pace and streaked over the line with his closest rivals seven and eight metres back. Jonathan Ntutu [South Africa] claimed silver while Radoslav Zlatanov [Bulgaria] came in third to win bronze.

Smyth equalled the 200m world record on Sunday when he claimed gold in that race but his 100m record of 10.46 was not breached this evening.
McKillop won the 800m and 1500m at the same event, with his second gold arriving yesterday. The Antrim runner had placed a bet on Smyth to break his world record but Smyth joked that he slowed up because he did not want to make him any money.
