James McGee was defeated in his US Open first round match tonight

The Irishman won the first set but was then overpowered by his opponent.

DESPITE WINNING THE first set, Irishman James McGee was defeated in four sets by Aleksandr Nedovyesov in his US Open first round match tonight at Flushing Meadows.

McGee got off to a great start, breaking Nedovyesov in the first game on the way to winning the first set 6-4. But Nedovyesov took control thereafter, winning the second set 6-2 before whitewashing McGee in the third.

McGee fought valiantly in the fourth set but was ultimately defeated 7-6 (7-3) to bow out.

It was the first time McGee had made the main draw of a grand slam event and he will take home $36,000 for reaching the first round.
