James McClean is out of this Sunday's qualifier against Georgia

An injury picked up by the winger in July has yet to fully heal.

WINGER JAMES MCCLEAN is out of this Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia due to injury. McClean had been tipped to start in Martin O’Neill’s first competitive match as manager, but an injury initially picked up by the Wigan midfielder back in July means the qualifier comes too soon for him.

In a pre-match interview with the FAI, McClean said the Georgia and Oman games came “just a few days short for me” and that he would return to Wigan to rehab the injury further. He added that he expects to be back fit for the next round of internationals.

Despite missing out on the fixture, McClean was confident that O’Neill’s team can get off to a winning start against Georgia this Sunday.

“If the lads play the way we know they can play then we should really pick up the three points,” McClean said.
