Jamaican footballer facing suspension after positive doping test

A team official is also set for an initial 30-day ban after the banned substance was detected after a World Cup qualifier.

AN UNNAMED JAMAICAN footballer has been provisionally suspended after failing a drugs test, FIFA have confirmed.

The Jamaica international and a team official are facing an initial 30-day ban after the player tested positive for a banned substance following the FIFA World Cup qualifier with Honduras on June 11.

Further disciplinary proceedings are set to follow, with both the player – who waived the right to have his B sample analysed – and the official given until August 12 to request a hearing.

“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has provisionally suspended a Jamaican international footballer and a Jamaican team official for an initial period of 30 days and opened disciplinary proceedings, following an adverse analytical finding in relation to a doping control conducted after the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier played in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on 11 June 2013,” a FIFA statement read.

The player has until August 19 to submit a statement to the governing body.

The news comes less than a month after Jamaican athletics stars Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson admitted to failing drugs tests.

Jamaica sit bottom of the group in the final round of World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF region, after taking just two points from their first six games.
