IRELAND FOOTBALL FANS are today sending their best wishes to former Boys in Green boss Jack Charlton.
Charlton, who led Ireland to their first and only European Championship finals in 1988, fell down the stairs in his home in Northumberland on Tuesday night.
The World Cup winner broke his hip and will face surgery today in Newcastle.

‘The stairs in his house are a bit tricky and awkward and he basically fell down them,” Charlton’s son, John, told the Daily Mail. “It could have been a lot worse because my mum was out of the house and he was on his own. Because of his age they want to operate on him, give him a new hip. We’ve all been worrying but he’s going to be fine.
“The doctors say he’ll be back on his feet within 24 hours of the operation and should be home next week. He’s in good spirits considering what happened. He’s sitting up in bed cracking jokes with the nurses.”
John Charlton also told reporters (see The Sun) that his father was forced to crawl to the phone to call for help.
“When I got round to the house he was sitting in his chair watching telly,” he added.

Charlton managed Ireland to Euro ’88 before leading the country to the World Cup quarter-finals in 1990 and a second-round exit four years later in the USA.
