Ivan Toney heading to Saudi Arabia; Southampton sign Aaron Ramsdale

The 28-year-old England forward is out of contract at the end of the season.

BRENTFORD HAVE ACCEPTED a €47.5million offer from Al-Ahli for Ivan Toney, the PA news agency understands.

England forward Toney has attracted interest from Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, but is now set for a medical ahead of completing a move to the Saudi Pro League outfit.

The 28-year-old has one year left on his Brentford deal and has yet to feature in a Bees matchday squad this season ahead of a potential move away from West London.

Al-Ahli have also reportedly agreed a deal with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, but it is uncertain if signing Toney will affect their move for the Nigeria forward.

The PA news agency also understands that Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto on a season-long loan.

Arsenal’s move for the 35-year-old Cherries captain is a straight switch with no obligation or option to buy.

Neto’s arrival in north London will pave the way for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to complete a permanent switch to Southampton.

“I think it will be massive,” boss Russell Martin said of Ramsdale’s imminent’s arrival before Southampton’s Premier League visit to Brentford on Saturday.

“Some of the guys will be surprised that he is coming but I think it is big. He wants to be here. I think it will give everyone a lift.

“It will be a big call if we get Aaron on time for tomorrow’s game, so I feel for Alex [McCarthy, Saints goalkeeper]. It is a really tough part of football.”

Wolves have signed another England goalkeeper with Sam Johnstone joining from Crystal Palace on a four-year contract, with the 31-year-old costing a reported £10m fee.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs told the Wolves website: “It’s great for us to have a player with a huge amount of Premier League experience and an international goalkeeper.

“It’s an area of the pitch we wanted to add more competition and, for us, it’s finding the right balance between the level of investment, what it adds to the squad and what it enables us to do for the rest of the squad.”

Everton striker Neal Maupay has joined Marseille on loan for the 2024-25 season, with the French club having an obligation to buy the 28-year-old at the end of the campaign.

Maupay made 32 appearances for Everton, scoring one goal, and spent last season on loan at his former club Brentford.

Rangers winger Scott Wright has signed a three-year deal at Sky Bet League One outfit Birmingham for an undisclosed fee.

Southampton signed England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal in a deal worth a reported £25 million (€30m) ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Ramsdale lost his place to David Raya last season, making just six appearances in the Premier League after the Spaniard’s arrival in 2023.

The 26-year-old had been linked with Wolves but that move fell through and paved the way for his switch to St Mary’s.

“I’m absolutely delighted. The way the manager wants to play, the way he was when I spoke to him, he was just full of so much enthusiasm,” Ramsdale said.

“I’d never met him before, but he made me feel about eight feet tall, which is just what you want.”

Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 and made 89 appearances in all competitions.

He was voted into the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year for the 2022-23 campaign, but was surprisingly axed to make way for Raya as Mikel Arteta looked to improve a team that eventually finished as runners-up to Premier League champions Manchester City for a second successive season.

Ramsdale’s father was critical of the way the Arsenal manager handled the situation after the keeper was dropped.

Arteta still paid tribute to Ramsdale for his contribution during three years at the Emirates Stadium.

“Aaron has been a top professional since joining in 2021 and has made many contributions during his time with us,” Arteta said.

“We thank Aaron for everything he gave to Arsenal and we wish him and his family the best of health, success and happiness in his new opportunity with Southampton.”

Ramsdale will aim to get his career back on track at promoted Southampton, with his debut potentially coming against Brentford on Saturday.

Saints boss Russell Martin believes former Bournemouth keeper Ramsdale will be revitalised by his move.

“He is hungry to become England’s number one again and he wants to be here. I think that is so important,” Martin said.

“If you had asked me four or five weeks ago, ‘would we have had a chance of signing Aaron Ramsdale?’ I would have thought you were probably crazy but then we’ve spoke a fair bit over that period of time.

“I think he has been frustrated over the last year at the lack of playing time, but he brings winning mentality, big character, big voice.”
