England doomed to early plane home as Costa Rica beat Italy

Bryan Ruiz crashed a header in off the underside of the Italian crossbar.

COSTA RICA BEAT Italy 1-0 in their Group D clash after Bryan Ruiz headed home just before half-time and goalline technology ruled in his favour. The result means Roy Hodgson’s England are eliminated from the tournament.

Mario Balotelli should have put the Italians 1-0 up after 30 minutes but spooned his effort left of the target with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Costa Rica were denied a stonewall penalty after 41 minutes but their flaring tempers cooled as Ruiz headed in off the underside of the crossbar following a superb, curling Junior Diaz cross.

Balotelli was felled in the Costan Rican box after the break but a penalty was not forthcoming.

England, who lost to Uruguay last night, will now play for pride against two-times victorious Costa Rica.
