AFTER MAKING IT through more than 70 miles of pure physical punishment, the last thing most people would do is pull up short of the finish line to celebrate early.
Jeremy Jurkiewicz did — and he very nearly paid the price.
The Frenchman thought he was home and hosed in the Ironman 70.3 (a fancy branding name for a half-Ironman) in Brasilia last weekend and, after checking over his shoulder to make sure the coast was clear, slowed right down to soak up some applause and dish out some high fives.
What he didn’t realise was that Igor Amorelli was right behind him and, spotting that Jurkiewicz hadn’t actually broken the tape to win, rapidly closing the gap between them.
Fortunately for Jurkiewic he noticed in the nick of time and in a second act of gracious sportsmanship, he stepped into Amorelli’s path with a half-block, half-body check.
By that stage Amorelli had already slowed, either content with scaring the living bejaysus out of his opponent or lacking the killer instinct necessary to humiliate a showboater and leave him with a lifetime of regret.
