Irish women endure second defeat to US despite improved performance

The Olympic champions are now 20 games unbeaten in total, following their 2-0 win.

THE IRISH NATIONAL women’s football were beaten 2-0 by USA in Arizona on Saturday night, having previously lost 5-0 to the same opposition last Wednesday.

The Americans took the lead in the first minute, with last Wednesday’s hat-trick hero Alex Morgan opening the scoring, finishing calmly after being played through by Lauren Cheney.

The hosts then went further ahead after 28 minutes, with Megan Rapinoe’s deflected effort from the edge of the box doubling her side’s advantage.

An excellent display from goalkeeper Emma Byrne kept the scoreline respectable for the Irish, who can take some encouragement from an improved display.

Meanwhile, following today’s win, the US are now 20 games unbeaten in total.
