Irish swimmer Meegan breaks the national 1500m record by almost 10 seconds

Meanwhile, Barry Murphy and Fiona Doyle have qualified for the semi-finals of the European Short Course Swimming Championships.

IRISH SWIMMER ANDREW Meegan broke the national 1,500m record by nearly 10 seconds today.

The 23-year-old secured a time of 15:00.88 at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Denmark this morning, beating his previous record of 15:11.69 at the Irish Nationals earlier this month.

Commenting on his achievement, Meegan said: “It was a good swim. It felt good throughout but I possibly went out a bit slow at the start, there are a few things to work on for the next time so that’s a good thing but I was definitely happy with how it went.”

In addition, Barry Murphy and Fiona Doyle have qualified for the semi finals of the competition.

Murphy swam a time of 26.86 in the 50m Breaststroke to finish second in heat 4 and sixth overall, while Doyle is in 13th going into the semi-final, after achieving a time of 1:06.90 in the 100m Breaststroke heats.
