IT WAS A great day for Team Ireland at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea today with the Alpine Skiers picking up one gold, three silver and one bronze medal in the Super G event.
The gold medal went to Rosalind Connolly from Portadown, Co Armagh, who was competing in the Novice event, while Katherine Daly from Dalkey, Co Dublin and Stuart Brierton from Bray, Co Wicklow won silver medals in their divisions.
Ryan Hill from Richhill, Co. Armagh won silver in the Intermediate event with Lucy Best from Lisburn, Co Antrim winning bronze in the same competition. Gary Burton came in fourth place in the Intermediate competition.
“I am thrilled at the performances of our skiers today and would like to congratulate each of the athletes and their coaches on their achievements,” said Matt English, Special Olympics Ireland chief executive.
“There was such disappointment yesterday when competition had to be called off because of the bad weather conditions but it’s clear from today’s performances that this interlude didn’t affect the athletes in any way. Once again Team Ireland has proven that hard work and training pay off and I would like to wish them all the very best in their remaining competition events here in South Korea”.
