Spiderman attack! Runner denied first place because of pole vault mishap at Intervarsities

You won’t see a race end like this for a long, long time.

YOU COULDN’T MAKE the ending up to this 800m heat at the Irish University Indoors yesterday.

NUIG’s Aengus Meldon had kicked and was leading the race into the home straight, when the unimaginable happened.

It was neck and neck between himself and DCU’s Paul Peppard while Queens’ Niall Attwood was also in the mix, but all of a sudden an elastic strap from the pole vault came loose and got tangled in Meldon’s legs.

The commentator’s brilliant initial reaction said it all: “Janey Mack!”

“It was like Spiderman threw something at him, Spiderman attacked him.”

Understandably, Peppard took advantage of Meldon’s misfortune as he took the victory, but rightfully so, the NUIG athlete was given a bye to the final.
