Premier League
Damien Duff (Wigan 1-2 Fulham) International retirement is treating Duff well as he continued his rich scoring vein with a third league goal of the season on Saturday. Current Ireland midfielder James McCarthy featured for the Latics.
Seamus Coleman (Swansea 0-3 Everton) It was a great weekend for the Donegal native, who started his first Premier League game of the current campaign. Coleman played at right-back for the Toffees who proved too much for Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.
Shane Long (West Brom 1-0 Reading) Long was dropped from the Baggies starting XI for Belgian Romelu Lukaku but came off the bench after 65 minutes to win an excellent header and set up his fellow striker for the winning goal.
Joey O’Brien (West Ham 1-1 Sunderland) The Dubliner began at the back for the Hammers and showed plenty of adventure to get forward while James McClean was on the opposing team with goalkeeper Keiren Westwood again resigned to the bench.
Jon Walters (Chelsea 1-0 Stoke) The Potters side including Walters, Marc Wilson and Glenn Whelan were minutes away from holding out Chelsea for a hard-earned draw when Ashley Cole arrived late in the box to fire past Asmir Begovic. Walters was the victim of a nasty challenge from David Luiz and, as the pic below shows, wasn’t one bit happy about it.
Ciaran Clark (Southampton 4-1 Aston Villa) Clark was at the heard of the Villa defence again in the absence of Richard Dunne but conceded four goals as the Saints earned their first points since returning to the top flight. Shay Given was left out in favour of Brad Guzan.
Wes Hoolahan (Newcastle United 1-0 Norwich) The 30-year-old was part of the Norwich side which went down to Demba Ba’s first half strike.
Npower Championship
Sean St Ledger (Leicester City 3-1 Hull City) Maintained his place in the Foxes line-up as they moved up to seventh in the Championship after a 3-1 win over Hull on Sunday.
Kevin Doyle (Peterborough 0-2 Wolves) Was close to scoring on two occasions during a promising performance up front for Wolves. Stephen Ward began at left-back while Stephen Hunt was an unused sub.
Keith Andrews (Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Bolton) The Bolton midfielder, who is available to return to the Ireland team for the visit of Germany next month after seeing out a suspension, played 90 minutes for the Trotters in the away win at Hillsborough.
League Two
Padraig Amond (Acrrington Stanley 1-0 Alderhot) Carlow striker Padraig Amond came off the bench, replacing Karl Sheppard, to score a last-minute winner for Paul Cooke’s men against Aldershot.
Eoin Doyle (Hibernian 2-2 Inverness CT) A second goal of the season for the former Shamrock Rover and Sligo Rovers striker helped Pat Fenlon’s side keep up the pace behind Motherwell at the top of the SPL. Another former League of Ireland player Richie Foran was on the scoresheet for Cally.
Cillian Sheridan (Kilmarnock 3-1 St Mirren) The Cavan native is back in Scotland after his spell with CSKA Sofia and recorded his first goal for new club Kilmarnock over the weekend.
Around the world…
Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy 4-2 Toronto FC) Ireland captain Robbie Keane was up against international team-mate Darren O’Dea and scored his 12th and 13th goals of the MLS season as the LA Galaxy beat Toronto FC 4-2 on Saturday.
Aiden McGeady(Spartak Moscow 1-0 FC Rostov) McGeady played 77 minutes for Spartak before being substituted in their 1-0 win at the Luzhniki Stadium.
