Irish boxer takes gold at the Youth Olympics

18 year old Ryan Burnett defeats Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizida.

IRISH YOUTH BOXER, Ryan Burnett, has won a gold  medal at the Youth Olympics Games in Singapore.

The 18-year-old saw off the challenge of Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizida in the 48kg final.

Burnett won the bout with an impressive scoreline of  13 – 6, following his 14 -1 victory in the semi-final.

He dropped Alizida in the third round with a nice left. Burnett had already lost twice to Alizida last year, in the President’s Cup and the AIBA World Youth final.

Speaking after the match the fighter from Holy Family Boxing Club had this to say:

It’s a dream come true for me. I couldn’t believe the level of support I got from the Irish fans this morning. They really made themselves heard and it was a great boost as it was tough in there. I’m thrilled with the win.
