Paddy Barnes literally carried the tricolour in the Maracana last night, but now it’s time to figuratively pass it on to other athletes.
First out the gate will be Dan Martin and Nico Roche in the cycling road race at 13.30. Watch them set off and then cast an eye to the water as Sanita Puspure is in the women’s single sculls rowing event. Puspure will be in heat 3 at 13.50.

If you prefer your athlete to be on some living breathing equipment, Clare Abbot, Jonty Evans, Mark Kyle and Padraig McCarthy will get under way in the dressage portion of the Eventing at 14.00.

We’re really excited about the prospect of an Irish team competing in an Olympic field sport. For the first time since the formation of the state, our men’s hockey team will play an Olympic fixture. India will be tough opposition at 15.00.
Mayo’s Nicholas Quinn will be in the second heat of the 100m breastroke which is scheduled to go to blocks at 19.07.
Bringing a close to Ireland’s day one is Kieran Behan, flipping his way through the gymnastics floor exercise from 22.30.
The best of the rest
If you don’t buy in to all that ‘it’s about taking part’ guff and only want to see the medals, there will be 12 golds up for grabs today starting with the women’s 10m air rifle at 14.30.
While weightlifting and judo are well worth casting an eye on, the attention-grabbing medals today will be the cyclingroad race (featuring Chris Froome as well as the two Irish riders) and swimming.
Hungarian Hosszu is by some distance the fastest woman in the 400m IM this year. Matt Dunham

In the pool, the men’s 400m individual medley final will go to blocks late tonight at 02.00. And sure if you’re still up then, you may as well wait a while longer for the women’s event (02.49, featuring Katinka Hosszu, Ye Shiwen and Hannah Miley) and the men’s 400m freestyle final (02.30).
This should be good too…
Warm up for that with a little joyous basketball from a USA team who really (really!) seemed to enjoy themselves in the pre-Games warm-ups. The NBA’s finest (apart from, y’know, the best two players in the league) take on China at 23.00 – rumour has it ‘Downtown’ Timmy McCarthy will be commentating, you deserve to hear him in action.

Fancy watching a new Olympic sport instead? The Rugby Sevens tournament gets underway at 15.00 when France’s women take on Spain. Most of the fixtures are potential crackers, but there’s something about those black jerseys. The formidable New Zealand women meet Kenya at 15.30.
