Magic Mooney leads Ireland to their fourth Intercontinental Cup

Ireland beat champions Afghanistan to regain the Intercontinental Cup in Dubai this morning.

Ireland (187 & 341) beat Afghanistan (182 & 224) by 122 runs

JOHN MOONEY TOOK the final four wickets as Ireland beat Afghanistan to clinch the Intercontinental Cup this morning.

The win, Ireland’s fourth in the competition, continues their dominance at Associate level and solidifies their claims for Test status.

It also completes a historic hat-trick of three ICC titles in three different formats in 2013.

Afghanistan started the morning in Dubai chasing 211 runs off their final five wickets.

But Mooney’s man of the match performance gave the defending champions no chance.

The match was finely poised until Max Sorensen took advantage of the new ball and caught Mohammad Nabi lbw for 49 runs.

And Mooney cleaned up the rest of the lower order, taking his personal haul to a brilliant 10 wickets for the match.

The game was Trent Johnston’s final Irish cap before retirement and the veteran pacer bowed out on a high with three wickets.
