Cardiff, anyone? Ireland invited around for neighbourly August friendly

The Boys in Green will play Wales at the start of next season.

THE FAI TODAY announced that the Republic of Ireland will make the short trip to Cardiff this August to face Wales in a friendly in the opening weeks of the season.

The match will take place on Wednesday August 14 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

With Sweden travelling for their return World Cup qualifier on September 6, the game will be an invaluable preparation for Giovanni Trapattoni’s men before that testing week – which will also include a trip to face Austria.

Wales manager Chris Coleman was also enthusiastic about the August friendly.

‘This will be a very useful test for us before embarking on the two World Cup games in September.” The former Fulham boss said on the Welsh FA’s website.

“The timing of the August friendly match is always so near to the start of the new domestic season, so that means a home game is always useful to cut-down on travelling and I am sure that our friends from Ireland will feel the same.”
