Backs
Hugo Keenan — 8: One of the few Irish players who looked his old self for virtually the entire game. One memorable tackle on Ben Earls and held his own in the aerial battle with the 6’5 Freddie Steward following one clean take over his head by the English fullback. Plenty of attacking involvement, too, including a clever kick into the English backfield which resulted in a five-metre Irish scrum.
Mack Hansen — 6: Tried to set the tone with an early rib-tickler on Cadan Murley and looked sharp on either side of his blood injury in the first half. Far quieter second 40, purely because Ireland found themselves so often attacking towards James Lowe’s wing.
Garry Ringrose — 7: His aerial take over Maro Itoje in the second half was one of the most rousing moments of the game from an Irish perspective. An excellent defensive effort with 12 tackles, which led the backs.
Bundee Aki — 7: Sensational second-half finish in the left-hand corner after a quiet game, relatively speaking, to that point. Still made 10 carries in under an hour but, aside from his try, he was well marshalled by Henry Slade and Ollie Lawrence.
James Lowe — 9: Among Ireland’s most effective players in both attack and defence in the first half. Obliterated Alex Mitchell to tee up Ireland’s first try for Gibson-Park. Exploded into life and ran the show when the game loosened in the second, finishing with 13 carries for 123 metres and a game-leading five clean breaks. A couple of poor exit kicks — one straight into touch — were the only blots on his copybook.
Sam Prendergast — 5: The second of his two poor early contestables ultimately resulted in England’s opening score for Cadan Murley. The young out-half showed some beautiful touches throughout — his passing range is going to make him a special player — but this was a day with as many downs as ups. One from three off the tee with a particularly poor conversion miss from Jamison Gibson-Park’s try, but his penalty to give Ireland a 13-10 lead after two earlier wides was very impressive in the context. By no means out of his depth or anything stupid like that; just finding his feet at 21.
Jamison Gibson-Park — 9: A couple of his early decisions in his conduction of traffic were questionable but Gibson-Park was the justified Player of the Match. His try finish was vintage as he turned the giant Freddie Steward inside out, and his defensive contribution in the second half was as impressive as his efforts with the ball as Ireland began to fizz.
Forwards
Andrew Porter — 8: Ireland’s scrum was without blemish and Porter was joint second in the tackle stakes, completing 13. Didn’t get much purchase out of his nine carries but was exceptional at the breakdown.
Rónan Kelleher — 7: Was sharp in the loose in the first half, pouncing upon one overthrown English lineout, and unfortunate not to bank a try. Like Porter, made nine carries but for more yardage.
Finlay Bealham — 8: Aside from his excellent scrummaging, he was far more physical in contact — and particularly in the tackle — than he was in November.
James Ryan — 7: Not quite as impactful overall as he has been in recent months but was vicious at the breakdown in particular and rescued Irish possession on at least three occasions.
Tadhg Beirne — 7: Fell off Ollie Lawrence in the lead-up to Murley’s opener and pinged for a cheeky infringement which saw Rónan Kelleher’s potential leveller chalked off. Responded with a poach penalty soon afterwards — the only turnover Ireland won in the first half — and bagged a try in the second with an excellent support run. Big defensive effort in particular with 12 tackles.
Ryan Baird — 7: Might have been culpable for the disconnect which resulted in Ben Earl’s linebreak in the first half (not marking him down for this without a rewatch). Brilliant carry down the right edge almost saw Baird bank a try. That was one of his six carries on a solid outing in which his explosivity was mostly kept in check by England.
Josh van der Flier — 8: A classic Van der Flier performance in which he stuck his head in places where others wouldn’t dip a toe. Led Ireland with 17 tackles and picked a couple of nice lines in attack. Was up to the pitch of the game from the first minute, which wasn’t the case across the board.
Caelan Doris — 7: Not quite a classic Doris performance in that he netted only 13 metres from 11 carries. His work rate was, as always, off the charts however: he made the second most tackles behind Van der Flier and won a turnover on a day in which Ireland didn’t win many.
Replacements:
Dan Sheehan (Kelleher 49′) — 9: It’s clear, now, that Sheehan transforms this team. His try was one of the best of the Farrell era and his constant, go-forward momentum is a game-changer that Ireland have sorely missed since last year.
Cian Healy (Porter 73′) — n/a:
Tom Clarkson (Bealham 58′) — 7: Made himself known with a couple of strong carries and continued to lock out the Irish scrum where Bealham had excelled before him.
Iain Henderson (Ryan 61′) — 6: Made five tackles in just under 20 minutes but didn’t didn’t make a carry or have any attacking lineout involvement.
Jack Conan (Baird 49′) — 8: Combined to reshape the game with Sheehan upon their joint introduction. Made serious inroads off five carries, particularly with his linebreak before Sheehan’s try, and put in seven big hits. A brilliant bench option for Ireland but in good enough form that he may start at Murrayfield.
Conor Murray — n/a:
Jack Crowley (Prendergast 58′) — 8: Contributed significantly to Ireland’s improvement. Three excellent kicks from hand, some beautiful short passing in tight spots, a half-break and two conversions — the latter of which was from the left-hand touchline. Crowley will feel he has proven a point.
Robbie Henshaw (Hansen 3′/Aki 57′) — 5: Didn’t have a great deal of opportunity to influence the game during his two cameos but will be disappointed not to have stopped Tommy Freeman at the death.
Very fair comments about Prendergast, the rating out of ten a bit harsh I’d have thought….
@Niall Carty: absolutely agree.
@Niall Carty: Why harsh? At least half his time he was fumbling. Not a go at the player, he 100% has the potential. It was unfair to start him here against England. Crowley was a world of difference, mainly because of what he has played. Ireland were more assured with Crowley, who ran them expertly. Start Prendergast again against Wales and Italy. Talk about in at the deep end!
@Dennis L: also because the steam was taken out of England when JC came on. We are lucky to have two 10 with so much potential. We will need both of them
@Ciaran Larkin: England emptied their bench at the same time. They’d as many fresh replacements as Ireland had.
@Niall Carty: cark bai!!!!!!!!
@Niall Carty: Player ratings are a great pool to fish for emotive response.
Freshen the team up a bit for next week. Kelleher was still good and so perhaps allow Sheehan to tear it up from 50 mins again next week?
Hopefully big Joe will be back to beef things up alongside Beirne.
Conan and Crowley have earned starts.
Not sure about Hansens form. Consider Nash.
@Nicholas Farrar: I think Hansen suffered from a lack of ball. He didn’t really make a wrong turn, he just did not get the ball. That said Lowe was exceptional on the other wing.
@Nicholas Farrar: strong rumour that Joe McCarthy was going to be benched before the injury anyway so I wouldn’t assume he’ll go straight into the team. They’ll stick with Ryan and Beirne in the row but 6 is up for grabs
@Dennis L: I dunno. I’m a fan of Mack, but he was poor today. His best attribute is that he “comes looking for work”, saying he suffered from a lack of ball goes against that.
I thought James Lowe should have been Mom. Conan and Crowley had huge impact it will be hard to leave them out next week .
7 for Baird seemed flaithiúlach to me. Strange to say that you won’t mark him down before a rewatch. Why rate players without all the information. There’s no rush.
Good read on Prenderghast, Jack was great off the bench , he should start next week
The bench won us the game today , many put their hands up for selection for next week.
Lowe was MOM for me thought he was excellent, thought Ryan had a very good game. The line out was excellent , Kelleher was very good he isn’t as dynamic as Sheehan but scrum looks more solid with him in the middle.
We were lucky not to lose a couple of line outs today with the ref calling in our favour but it was excellent today maybe McCarty’s bulk might be an issue here.
I genuinely thought Sam P would struggle today and he really did, he looks good for Leinster at club level playing behind the Irish pack but at international level where games are more even he has a bit to go,I have to caveat my thought on his play by his age , I don’t think he is as good as Crowley but in 3 years he could be a worldy.
@Bruce 51: don’t agree about Prendergast, tried things but needs to put some meat on his frame. The lineout finally fired and no stupid penalties were given away unlike in November
@aidan prior: he is only 21 and only now starting for his Provence and given the size of his brother bulk will come I think. I remember ROG at 21 and Crowley at 21 both showed lots of promise but SP is more advanced but that’s for the future. Right here right now he has a good bit to go , he is clearly modelling his game on Sexton but doesn’t attack the like aggressively enough ( lack of bulk isn’t helping) , like I said give him 3 years and I think he will be a top player but just not yet, if Crowley kicks on like I hope he will he can be devastating, hopefully this is what the Irish management are trying to get out of him. He has all the ammunition to keep SP on the bench if we can get him a bit angry. At the moment I think Crowley can win us games I am not convinced that SP can (yet)
@Bruce 51: makes sense in what your saying. Arguably he was probably ahead in selection terms up to last month when Crowley started to come into form, so perhaps he’s done enough now to get the nod next week.
Some of these ratings seem a bit click-baity
Lowe was a man possessed….. a class act… kept Ireland on the front foot … IMO a man of the match performance…. Kelleher played his part know Dan was waiting on the bench….
Any sign of the resident clown Adizlack 93 ??
@Lulu: ye Prendergast was bad unfortunately, JC to start vs Scotland on todays evidence. I call it how I see it, regardless of club or country
@Lulu: you still have a fierce pong of cattle off you delulu
@adizlack93: Better that than a fong of a scanger !
@adizlack93: Alas… forced to watch your ‘kick percentage’ argument crumble :’(
@Thesaltyurchin: nah mate I couldn’t give a f*ck cuz we won
@Thesaltyurchin: it’s good to see you beans think about me though
I honestly thought Lowe was POM ( player of Match) and not Pete O’Mahony…
@Den: go home Den, ur drunk
@Den: aside from the two kiwis and Sheehan I thought bealum was incredible around the rucks . Best game I’ve ever seen that lad play ..he was brilliant in contact…on England’s side , Alex Mitchel missed two try saving tackles not good enough at this level …
@Stuart: 100% I think Finlay answered a lot of critics. Yes, based on November he was off the boil, but he’s one of the best in the game and showed it today.
@Patrick Naughton: a joke Paddy a joke
@Stuart: So aside from the two Kiwis and Sheehan you thought the Aussie was good.I suppose that’s why they call it an international
@Stuart: I didn’t see any kiwis playing. Just all IRISHMEN and naturalised Irishmen who bleed for the jersey. Pothole.
5 is ridiculous for Prendergast (and henshaw too). Prendergast wasn’t great but at least a 6.5 or 7. By the time Crowley came on the England lads had gassed themselves so Crowley didn’t have the same pressure Prendergast had
@Jeff Greene: Thats why all this is so stoopy, every minute of a test game is different, but we’re desperate to present finite judgement. Player ratings 100% pure media gas.
Is irish rugby really actually in a good place? We rely on 3 New Zealanders to win games for us really… We’d be goosed without them. (Runs for cover)
@Barry Baz: it’s an uncomfortable reality that we’d of course be weaker if we didn’t have the 3 NZ born players in the squad. I’d note, however, that the country you mention (NZ) are far more notorious for playing foreign born players than anyone and had more foreign players in their squad when they were here recently.
@Barry Baz: I don’t think Craig Casey would weaken that team in any way, if he wasn’t injured I’d be saying start Casey and have gibbo come on and cause havoc for half an hour. That’d be class
@Barry Baz: I only saw 23 IRISHMEN in the squad this evening. What game were you watching? Do you have the same concern about Scotland whose captain is Sione Tuipolotu? Pathetic.
Why are a different side when dan plays
@Seanie: we
@Seanie: Sheehan was great when he came on but Kelleher also had a very good game, didn’t really put a foot wrong
@Seanie: good question all the same Why?
@Seanie: as a South African, there are 4 names I hate seeing on the Ireland team sheet when they play us: in no particular order, Sheehan, vdFlier, Beirne, Doris. All among the top players in their respective positions, possibly the very best, much as it pains me to admit it. I almost felt sorry for England yesterday.
Interesting to read the player ratings from the guardian where provincial biases don’t play a role.
Didn’t have great seats but I’m inclined to think you’re being generous today Gav.
Quite harsh the 5 for SP, missed two kicks from the tee but I thought he ran the game well. Englands blitz defense was very impressive and aggressive in the first half. Think they punched themselves out in the second and the game loosened up as a contest. SP will learn from this and emerge a better player. Crowley and Conan to start at Murrayfield and if McCarthy is fit should come onto the bench.
@Paul Blake: He didn’t ‘run the game’ neither did Crowley, it’s not a car with a steering wheel, the other 14 players did just great without a 10 in line for that final try, I mean an outhalf can go 20 minutes without touching the ball ffs.
Is Bealham injured ? Could be in real trouble if so …
@John mccabe: I wouldn’t say so, clarkson looked very good today, start him v scot land and then have heavy cover th and Boyle lh
I would leave Sam to start next week. It’s unlikely that Scotland will start three 7s, and Sam Pendergast will have more time to get his kicks away. His running & passing game is quite good.
I must have missed where Lowe scored !!!!
@Lulu: Go to spec savers
@Con Cussed: LOL I think I need to go to spec savers ;0))))
No Irish player had a poor game today but some were really excellent. The game against Scotland is a whole new challenge so the Management will start with a clean sheet for taking them on.
The Irish Management must take lots of credit. They picked a team and bench which fitted the opposition and all of their selections were justified.
Scotland won’t let us pick off lineouts at No 2 without opposition. They will target our front-row in the scrum and our wingers’ defence because that’s where they are strong. Hopefully Goodman and O’Connell can target their weaknesses as well as they picked up those of England.
I’ve never been a Lowe fan and probably never will be, but I have to grudgingly admit he’s damn good!
