Ireland v Austria: Here's how the players rated

The Boys in Green faced Austria in a World Cup qualifier this evening.

David Forde – 7 The Galwegian goalkeeper didn’t have a huge amount to do but was assured when he needed to be. Couldn’t do anything about the deflected equaliser, however.

Seamus Coleman – 6 Wasn’t bombing forward as much as you would have like to see but a solid performance from the Everton man.

John O’Shea – 6 A number of late tackles earned him a yellow card in the first half. The skipper was visibly gutted at the final whistle.

Ciaran Clark – 5 Inexcusably dispossessed by Junuzovic when he should have put his foot through the ball, which led to the goal but recovered from that before being taken off in the second half.

Marc Wilson – 6 Linked up with McClean well and is undoubtedly our best left full-back right now.

Jon Walters – 8 Did an admirable job on the wing and put away his penalty excellently before adding a second goal in first half injury-time. Was switched up front for the final moments.

Glenn Whelan – 6 Good ball to Long in the lead-up to the penalty. Also took over from McClean on corner duties and picked out Walters at the back post with his first one.

James McCarthy – 7 Followed up his man-of-the-match performance with another accomplished performance.

James McClean – 7 Some really good play on the left flank from the Sunderland winger but is still inclined to give possession away too easy at times.

Conor Sammon – 6 Competed for headers all night long and was caused the Austria backline problems which was exactly what he asked to do. However, you feel Ireland have better options in attack.

Shane Long – 8 Drew the foul from Pogatetz for the penalty, deserved a second with a super piece of improvisation to backheel off the post and, overall, led the line brilliantly.

Substitutes:

Sean St Ledger – 6 Slotted in at centre half in place of Clark for the final 18 minutes but couldn’t prevent Alaba’s late equaliser.

Paul Green - Wasn’t on long enough for a rating.
