Hendrick named in starting XI for Spain friendly

The Derby midfielder will make his first senior start against the world champions at Yankee Stadium.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS named his team to play Spain in New York.

With several players missing for various reasons, Ireland travelled to the US with 16 outfield players for the last of their four-game programme.

The current world champions are the opponents at Yankee Stadium tomorrow night (1am kick-off Irish time) and the Italian looks to have gone with a 4-4-2 formation – handing 21-year-old Jeff Hendrick his first senior start as James McCarthy’s midfield partner.

MLS-based defender Darren O’Dea comes into the backline while Seamus Coleman has been named on the wing and Conor Sammon partners in-form Robbie Keane up front.

A year ago, Ireland were beaten 4-0 by the Iberians when the teams last met for a Euro 2012 group game in Gdansk.
