Stokes and Doyle start for Ireland in Cologne

With Robbie Keane unable to recover from an ankle injury, Noel King has put his faith in the Celtic and Wolves men.

NOEL KING HAS named Anthony Stokes and Kevin Doyle in his starting XI to face Germany tonight (7.45pm kick-off Irish time).

Ireland’s caretaker manager had a number of positional decisions to make and gave little away during this week’s training camp.

As expected, Millwall’s David Forde starts in goal with Keiren Westwood injured. The suspensions to central defensive pairing John O’Shea and Richard Dunne see Ciaran Clark and Damien Delaney of Crystal Palace deputise while Seamus Coleman (named captain for the night on his 25th birthday) and Stephen Kelly both get the nod.

In what could be a 4-5-1 or possibly 3-5-2, the returning Darron Gibson is picked alongside Glenn Whelan, James McCarthy, Marc Wilson and Celtic’s Anthony Stokes.

Captain Robbie Keane has failed to recover from an ankle injury so Wolves striker Kevin Doyle leads the line.

Ireland v Germany: Forde, Coleman, Delaney, Kelly, Clark, Whelan, Gibson, McCarthy, Wilson, Doyle, Stokes.
