Soldado and Mata strike as Ireland go down fighting in New York

Spain ran out 2-0 winners in last night’s clash in Yankee Stadium.

DESPITE A CREDITABLE display from a young Irish side in New York tonight, Spain ultimately ran out 2-0 winners in an international friendly at Yankee Stadium.

Having held the world and European champions in the first half substitute Roberto Soldado broke the deadlock after 69 minutes with a crisp volley from the edge of the box.

Sean St Ledger later  had the ball in the Spanish net but the goal was ultimately ruled out for offside before Santi Cazorla and Juan Mata combined before the Chelsea man finished.
