IT’S BEEN A successful morning’s work for Team Ireland at the European Swimming Championships in Glasgow, as they four new national records.
Shane Ryan, Darragh Greene and the 4x100m freestyle men’s relay team — Ryan, David Thompson, Jordan Sloan and Robbie Powell — all clocked new Irish senior records while Conor Ferguson hit a new mark at junior level.
Rio 2016 Olympian Ryan was in stellar form in his 50m backstroke heat as he powered into the semi-final, qualifying fastest with a record-breaking time of 24.32 seconds.
The Pennsylvania man’s time comes as the third fastest in the world this year, and he’ll hope to build on that in tonight’s semi-final which kicks off at 5.25pm.
Joining him there will be Antrim native Conor Ferguson, who set a new Irish junior record himself with a time of 25.08 in his heat.
23-year-old Longford swimmer Darragh Greene kept the success rolling then in the 100m Breaststroke heats as he clocked a time of 1:00.20, another Irish senior record.
He goes into this evening’s semi-final (5.39pm) in 11th place, while Alex Murphy was also in action in the heats and finished in 1:02.49.
The Irish 4x100m freestyle relay team bagged the third Irish senior record of the morning, touching home fourth in 3:17.55, shaving almost two seconds off the previous record.
