IRELAND HAVE WON the Plate in their debut appearance at the IRB Women’s World Series in China by beating Australia and the Netherlands today.
Having beaten Japan yesterday to secure a place in the quarter finals, the Irish team, which included eight players from the Grand Slam-winning side, lost out to eventual champions New Zealand 31-5 at Guangzhou University Town Stadium before tries from Jeannette Feighery and Alison Miller and a late penalty from Clarie Keohane helped them defeat the Wallabies by a point to reach the Plate final.
There, Jon Skurr’s side met the Netherlands – who got the better of Ireland twice at the European Sevens last summer.
It wasn’t to be three-in-a-row, however, as Feighery and Miller again went over with Keohane adding two conversions in a 14-10 victory.
