Pics: Ireland's Paralympic swimmers return home with 8 world championship medals

Team Ireland won eight medals in eight days at the Paralympic Swimming World Championships in Montreal.

IRELAND’S PARALYMPIC SWIMMERS returned home to Dublin today with some extra luggage — eight world championship medals.

London gold medallist Darragh McDonald won gold in the 400m freestyle S6 while 17-year-old Bethany Firth, who also won Paralympic gold last summer, won three silver medals in the 200m freestyle S14, 100m backstroke S14 and 100m breaststroke S14.

Dublin’s Ellen Keane, 18, won bronze in the 100m breaststroke SB8 and in the 100m butterfly S9 while 19-year-old James Scully won his first-ever international medal with bronze in the 200m freestyle S6.

Laurence McGivern rounded out Ireland’s medal haul with bronze on the final day of competition in the 100m backstroke S9.

Limerick’s Jonathan McGrath also made his world championship debut in the 400m freeestyle S8, finishing 12th.
