Ireland outclassed as Euro qualification campaign suffers setback

Spain prevailed despite an early penalty save from goalkeeper Emma Byrne.

THE IRISH WOMEN’S National team were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Spain in today’s Euro 2017 qualifier in Madrid.

Two goals from Veronica Bouquet and one by Jennifer Hermoso ensured a repeat of the same final score from when the sides last met in Tallaght Stadium back in November.

And it could have been worst for the Girls in Green, were it not for goalkeeper Emma Byrne’s second-minute save from Boquete’s spot kick.

The win means Spain maintain their 100% record and sit top of Group 2 on 18 points, while Ireland still remain well in contention for qualification, as they prepare for games against Finland and Montenegro in June.

Spain WNT: Dolores Gallardo (GK), Celia Jimenez, Leila Ouahabi, Andrea Pereira, Ruth Garcia, Virginia Torrecilla, Marta Torrejon, Veronica Boquete, Alexia Putellas, Erika Vasquez, Amanda Sampedro.

Republic of Ireland WNT: Emma Byrne (c), Louise Quinn, Niamh Fahey, Karen Duggan, Diane Caldwell, Aine O’Gorman, Denise O’Sullivan, Julie-Ann Russell, Stephanie Roche, Katie McCabe, Meabh De Burca
