Ireland's Mark English reaches European 800m final

However, there was disappointment elsewhere for the likes of Thomas Barr and Amy Foster.

UCD AC’S MARK English has reached the European 800m final, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1.46.23 in tonight’s semi-final, qualifying as the fastest loser as a result.

Commenting after the race, the relieved Irish athlete said: “The aim coming in was to make the final so I am happy with that; it’s a relief now to be in the final. Of course I wanted to be in the top three but that doesn’t matter now. I’ll recover and give it my best in the final.”

English now becomes the first Irish athlete to qualify for the event since James McIlroy (cousin to golfer Rory) finished fourth in 1998.

There was disappointment for Ireland elsewhere though, as Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC) failed to qualify for the 400m Hurdles final as he finished third in his semi-final.

Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Richard Morrissey (Crusaders AC) also both missed out on a place in the final of the 400m, while Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC) similarly fell short in her attempts to qualify for the 100m final.
