Slick skipper show from Mulhall as Ireland see off Russia to battle on in San Fran

Ireland Women will now play Spain for fifth place at the Sevens World Cup.

A FAMOUS WIN over England, a 45-0 quarter-final defeat to reigning champions New Zealand, and now a win over Russia in the 5-8th place play-offs — it’s been a manic few hours for Ireland Women at the Sevens World Cup.

Ireland's Lucy Mulhall and Russia's Daria Shestakova Star turn: Lucy Mulhall in action.

Anthony Eddy’s side recorded a 20-15 win over Russia, meaning they’ll now play off for fifth place in San Francisco against Spain.

Ireland were on-form with Lucy Mulhall, Louise Galvin, Eve Higgins and Stacey Flood among those to stand out and clock tries.

Russia started the brighter of the two sides as Arina Bystrtrova crossed the line, but an intense rally either side of half-time saw Flood, Higgins, Mulhall and Galvin all power over in the space of five minutes.

Daria Shestakova and Marina Kuskina struck back late on but it was too little, too late for the Russians as Ireland march on.

Ireland are out in action once again at 7pm (3am Irish time).
