IRELAND RECORDED AN historic victory over England, ranked fifth in the world, at the Eurohockey Championships on Saturday to win bronze for the first time ever.
Craig Fulton’s side recovered from an early setback to stun the hosts in London and secure a 4-2 victory with Shane O’Donoghue sealing the deal in the final seconds with a penalty stroke.
England led twice through Harry Martin and Adam Dixon but Ireland showed great character to stay in the contest as O’Donoghue and then Alan Sothern levelled before Eugene Maggee fired the Green Machine into the lead.
O’Donoghue then scored his second in the dying embers to spark Irish celebrations.

“A great result today for the performance we have put in this past week,” Fulton said afterwards. “To all the management team and players…we made history, well done! I know there is more to come.”
Ireland are currently ranked 14th in the world and scored with three of their first four shots to punish England on what was an indelible day for Irish hockey.
“We are mixing it with the top teams in the world, teams we aspire to be like and to compete with,” man-of-the-match Paul Gleghorne said.
“It is absolutely brilliant to get a bronze. We are delighted.”
