You'll never walk alone: 1.6 million tune in on Ireland's night of pain

Was the Late Late Show really that bad on Friday night?

IF MISERY LOVES company, fans had plenty of it last Friday night as they watched Ireland’s 6-1 humiliation against Germany.

A sell-out crowd packed Lansdowne Road for the embarrassingly one-sided World Cup qualifier, the first full house at a football match since the redeveloped Aviva Stadium opened.

But those who missed out on tickets weren’t spared the pain — RTÉ figures show that 1.6 million tuned in at some stage to watch Messrs Özil, Reus and company strut their stuff without moving out of second gear.

And though many paying fans upped and left before the full-time whistle, more than half a million viewers didn’t even have the heart to change channels with 512,000 sticking it out for the entirety of the four-hour-plus nightmare.

Hands up who’s looking forward to the Faroes match tomorrow night?
