Ireland have released their new alternative jersey... and it's purple

The international teams will wear it as part of their change kit for 2016/17.

THE IRFU HAVE today unveiled Ireland’s alternative jersey for this coming season.

Made by Canterbury, the new purple kit will be worn by the international teams as a change to their traditional green and white.

“The new alternate kit focuses on the heritage surrounding Irish rugby,” reads the press release.

“Taking inspiration from Lansdowne Road, the oldest rugby ground in the world and the historical home of the IRFU, 4 gold bar tacks link to the embroidery on the original Lansdowne Caps.”

It doesn’t appear to mention the thinking behind the unusual choice of colour, however.
