Will this year's International Rules one-test series be more competitive? INPHO/James Crombie

No more short kick-outs as International Rules modified to benefit Aussies

Additionally a mark will no longer be awarded for a backward pass.

THE GAA AND AFL have confirmed changes to the one-test International Rules series this November designed to allow “a broader range of AFL players to participate in the game.”

Goalkeepers must now kick the ball beyond the 45m line after all wides, behinds and overs which, according to a statement issued by the GAA today, “will help bring the taller players (and contested marks) into play.”

Three other changes have also been made to the laws with ‘marks’ no longer allowed on backward kicks. Instead, play will be called on.

The number of consecutive handpasses allowed has raised from four to six while the number of interchanges have been increased to 15 per quarter with an unlimited number allowed at the quarter, half and three quarter-time intervals.

The AFL recently confirmed that their team for the November 22 game would be complied exclusively of players with All Australian experience prompting the likes of Patrick Dangerfield and Luke Hodge to commit to the test.
