Injury update: Ruddock called up, Sexton expected to be fit

Rhys Ruddock has been called into the Ireland squad in place of John Muldoon, who tore his medial knee ligament in the win over Fiji.

LEINSTER BACK-ROW Rhys Ruddock has been called into the Ireland squad for Saturday’s final November International against Argentina.

Ruddock replaces Connacht’s John Muldoon who is set to miss 10 to 12 weeks after he tore his medial knee ligament against Fiji last weekend.

Muldoon was stretchered off five minutes into the second half of Ireland XV’s 53-0 win and team manager Michael Kearney confirmed the tear and the anticipated recovery time following scans yesterday.

The blow will definitely rule Muldoon out of Connacht’s Heineken Cup double-header against Biarritz next month and, barring a miracle recovery, the 29-year-old will also miss the final two European games against Harlequins and Zebre in the new year.

With crucial world rankings points on the line against Argentina, coach Declan Kidney received a welcome boost with the news that out-half Jonny Sexton is expected to return to full training on Thursday.

Sexton was originally named on the replacements bench against Fiji but pulled out shortly before kick-off with what Kidney described as “a bit of a tight groin.”

A scan on the injury showed no damage, Kearney said today.
