'Inexperienced' Brady misses out as Ireland stick with tried and trusted

The Manchester United winger has been named as back-up to Ireland’s 23-man squad for October’s qualifiers.

HAVING IMPRESSED ON his Ireland senior debut, Robbie Brady finds himself on the standby list for next month’s World Cup 2014 double-header.

The 20-year-old Manchester United youth product shone brightest in an experimental team which disposed of Oman with relative ease at Craven Cottage earlier this month – setting up two goals with precise deliveries and scoring a magnificently-executed volley.

There is little doubt that the Dubliner is the most promising player coming through the ranks right now and although Giovanni Trapattoni has effectively named him as first replacement, he is unwilling to risk bringing a player with so little international experience into the 23-man panel who face the might of Germany.

Asked about whether he has spoken to Brady at the squad announcement this afternoon, Trapattoni said: “No, I don’t speak with him because he is an option at the moment. After the game (against Oman) I said ‘congratulations’ because he played very well.

His attitude is different, like creative players but at the moment against this opponent we need players with experience. We have the team and (returning) in the midfield Fahey and Andrews.”

His comments after the Oman win suggested that it was a one-off and the old reliables would return so unsurprisingly, David Meyler, Joe O’Brien and Alex Pearce don’t make the cut.

On Darron Gibson and Kevin Foley, the pair who are in self-imposed exile after growing frustrated at the lack of game-time under the current regime, Trapattoni said that because both are injured an effort to bring them back hasn’t been made, but added their situations will be looked at again in the not-too-distant future.

“He is again injury. Gibson is still disappointed but also injury but we wait when he will play we can ask again but at the moment no.”
