To take part at the Hazeltine National Golf Course next year, Poulter needs to play in 13 European Tour events this year.
He had planned to compete at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai next month but, after falling out of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking over the weekend, that was no longer possible.
As a result, Poulter had little or no time to grab his passport and arrange a visa before jetting off to the Hong Kong Open.
