Dortmund emerged 4-1 victors on the night.

Relieved Hummels thanks Dortmund team-mates following Madrid rout

Meanwhile, Dortmund’s team manager, Michael Zorc, insisted the victory was well-deserved.

MATS HUMMELS THANKED his team-mates for helping his side recover and beat Real Madrid after the German defender’s error led to the opposition’s equalising goal.

Hummels failed to put sufficient power into a pass in the first half, allowing Gonzalo Higuain in to square for Cristiano Ronaldo and bring Madrid level, after Robert Lewandowski had netted for the hosts.

However, the Polish striker went on to score three more goals in the second half to put Jurgen Klopp’s side in with an excellent chance of reaching the final.

Hummels told Sky Deutschland: “I’m really glad. The manner in which the lads handled my mistake was great. The mistake really bothered me.

“You can’t be satisfied with me today, but everyone else on the pitch and in the stands did great.”

Dortmund’s team manager, Michael Zorc, insisted the victory was well-deserved, but warned against a careless approach in the second leg, claiming the tie is far from over.

“It was an extraordinary performance for almost the entire 90 minutes,” he said. “The goal we conceded was a mistake, but the team corrected it in the second half.

“Real have enjoyed several clear victories at home over the past decade so we had to pay great attention.”
