Blink and you'll miss him: Injured Hoolahan pulls out of Ireland squad

The Norwich man was only called up to the side earlier today, after Darron Gibson pulled out.

NORWICHโ€™S WES HOOLAHAN has pulled out of the Ireland squad only hours after being called up by Giovanni Trapattoni to replace the injured Darron Gibson.

The star had been set to be part of the squad for the friendly against Serbia on August 15.

A statement from the FAI released this evening read as follows:

โ€œWes Hoolahan has been unable to answer Giovanni Trapattoniโ€™s call up this evening. The player was disappointed but due to an Achilles tendon flare up, he requires rest during this period.

โ€œHoolahan had been called up to replace Darron Gibson who suffered a tear to his left thigh during Evertonโ€™s pre-season training.โ€

It remains unclear whether or not Trapattoni will opt to call up another player in place of the Norwich man.

No it was dublin city council that made the decision. Croke park made an agreement to hold 3 events per year. People have a right to make objections on any matter, itโ€™s called democracy!!

Sporting events are completely different to a concert. Matches are held during the daytime, at weekends, with a lot less noise in a stadium designed to hold sporting events.

Shirley there is a big difference between one All Ireland and the equivalent of 5 All Irelands on consecutive nights. The residents have every right to protest, and even though I would have been in favour of all the concerts going ahead, that is democracy in action. Accusations can be thrown at the DCC manager, the promoters, the GAA and Garth Brooks as well as the residents groups. The main blame has to go to the GAA and Aiken promotions as they knew there was an agreement in place that only a certain number of concerts were to take place each year and they went ahead and decided to break this agreement. We now have a sorry state of affairs where no group comes out looking good and the economy loses tens of millions and all the fans lose out.

Lastly what do Garth Brooks fans think of what he has done, a man of principle or a stubborn uncompromising grump.

And donโ€™t give me any oulโ€™ schite about an agreement. DCC should have told Aikens the concerts would not get permission on the basis of the One Direction concerts and Keegan should have done it as soon as the concerts were announced, not last week.

Alan โ€“ you are clearly a GAA apologist. They not Aitken are the licence holder, and the GAA as licencee could have told Aitken Promotions straight off the bat that the venue wasnโ€™t available under the terms of their licencing agreement for more than two or three nightsโ€ฆ.

Crooks has shown his true colours and exactly what he thinks of his Irish fans. By my calculations he would still gross โ‚ฌ18 Million from the three nights, more than enough profit to be made for even one average musicianโ€ฆ.

Did I say they were Richie, anywhere? But Aitkenโ€™s donโ€™t own the stadium, and they didnโ€™t negotiate the stadium licence when the ground was redeveloped. They were absolutely complicit in this folly, once Aitkenโ€™s wafted the promise of a big cheque at them they lost the run of themselves. The stadium events manager and any committee overseeing the events team should get the bullet for this fiascoโ€ฆ.

Aiken knew exactly what the story was with the stadium. He knew about the agreement . Three gigs were slated originally . It was then pushed to five . Everybody saw the dollars including Croke Park . But the buck stops with Aiken and Brooks . They pushed five concerts. Yes The GAA facilitated it . However Aiken sold the tickets and Brooks threw his toys out of the pram and refused to run with what had been the original plan . And spare me the default drivel of โ€œsack the managerโ€. Croke Park is highly profitable and has already grossed โ‚ฌ1.2 million in concert fees this year . The people who run Croke Park do very well.

Right so you agree then, GAA agreed use for three nights and when Aiken went back for five instead of the GAA saying โ€œsorry we canโ€™t offer the stadium as it falls outside our events licence and agreement with residents.

And sure why should Brooks get any special treatment, July last year, Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band played Thomond Park on the 16th, moved on to Pairc Uรญ Chaoimh on the 18th, then Belfast on the 20th, finishing up with two concerts in Kilkenny on the 27th/28th. And this is an artist who has greater record sales in Ireland than Brooks, but unlike Brooks and his entourage actually has some humility about him and respect for his audience!

GAA could and should have straight up told Aiken and Brooks to feck right off for the extra nights, but didnโ€™t because they chose to gamble and chase the buck instead.

And tell me seeing as youโ€™re quoting some figures, how much do you reckon the GAAโ€™s cut of the โ‚ฌ18m Gross was given what we know from the Rugby use of the ground. And what organisation wouldnโ€™t fire an employee who lost them a huge amount of money due to gross negligence?

Good man. You agree that Brooks is wrong. Where you are wrong is blaming the GAA for the cancellation of the concerts . Three was the initial agreement . Five came about as a result of the collective actions of Aiken, Croke Park and Brooks . Any or all could and should have shouted stop. None did . To say The GAA is primarily responsible for the cancellation of the concerts is wrong. Aiken is the businessman and promoter . He has spent a life time at this . He sold the tickets and he gambled . The primary responsibility for the loss of all concerts tests with that petulant tosser Brooks as he has cancelled the remaining three .

The cut was โ‚ฌ 400,000 per concert. That means that losing the fourth and fifth concerts cost โ‚ฌ800,000. Brooks petulence has caused the loss of the other concerts. Your knee jerk reaction in relation to the stadium directors position is typical of the spoiled brat post Celtic Tiger mentality of the malcontents. โ€œSack the managerโ€, they shrilly scream. Peter McKenna has done an excellent job. The stadium is paid for and debt free. It is highly profitable and under his stewardship will continue to be so. Keep your post Celtic Tiger contrariness to yourself . Itโ€™s no good to anyone . By your reckoning Ryanair should have sacked Michael O Leary after he cost them tens of millions on ill judged fuel purchasing policy and buying Aer Lingus shares . Thankfully Ryanairโ€™s knees donโ€™t jerk like yours .

โ€œYour knee jerk reaction in relation to the stadium directors position is typical of the spoiled brat post Celtic Tiger mentality of the malcontents. โ€

Really Richie, and how do you figure that?

Despite being Irish, I donโ€™t live in Ireland and havenโ€™t since before the Celtic Tiger period thankfully as it seem to have bred a certain new type of pompous ego in sections of the populus.

And god bless you if you think MIchael Oโ€™Leary is ultimately responsible for managing hedging fuel purchases for Ryanair, (heโ€™ll certainly step forward to claim the credit if thereโ€™s an upside, thatโ€™s for sure). But no, they actually employ humans who deal with all their suppliers (including aviation fuel) and itโ€™s they who would get the bullitt not Saint Michael.

    http://www.supplymanagement.com/news/2009/fuel-hedging-to-fly-higher-at-ryanair

Also given there has been a five year gain in Aer Lingus shares regardless of whether the endgame of taking over Aer Lingus is off the table so Ryanair are in profit (to the tune of โ‚ฌ100m) anyway on their investment, regardless of any short term fluctuation on their own share price after the UK Competition Commission decision forcing them to reduce their shareholding they are quids in.

But Iโ€™m glad you agree that all three parties, GAA/ Aiken and Brooks are equally culpable, my point was that the GAA could have avoided this fiasco right from the start by telling the promoter โ€œNOโ€. If they had given a clear message to Aiken then he would not have risked selling tickets to to the poor mugs who are likely to lose some of their hard earned moneyโ€ฆ.

I donโ€™t know how an organisation that is party to an agreement can be surprised when the terms of that agreement are enforced.

In my view, the GAA went into this process with the view that the weight of money on the line would push the matter through. This way precedent would be set and the next time they exceed the agreement they would be able to point to the Brooks decision and get it through on that grounds. They fully deserve this result, but in many ways it was a free bet for the GAA as they had Aiken Promotion to pick up the tab if it didnโ€™t come off.

For once, someone has done the right thing in this country and not bowed to the pressures of the money men. If GAA want to hold more concerts, let them go and negotiate a new agreement with the residents and not try and bully it through like they did.

Surely common sense could have told them that there would be a problem with 5 nights! The local residents told them that from day 1, but sure when did The GAA ever respect their wishes?

Youโ€™re welcome, you should come over anyway even going to the Ilac centre has better than listening to Garth Brooks who btw cancelled his own concerts because heโ€™s greedy. I canโ€™t imagine being a resident of Croke Park and listening to a man who looks like Homer Simpson wearing a cowboy hat for 5 nights.

Wasted? So youโ€™re just going to let the money go to waste and no longer come to Ireland because a concert isnโ€™t going ahead? More money than sense if thatโ€™s the case.

Well said. Why should anybody trust any new agreement? They squirmed out of the last one. Respect to the little guys, you won this one. David 5, Goliath Nil. We can be proud we live in a country where due process trumps big business, and understands thatโ€™s whatโ€™s right is not always popular; and whatโ€™s popular is not always right! Residents, take a bow.
