Holley rejects offer to replace Elwood at Connacht

The former Ospreys coach said he made the decision because of “the timing and my current personal circumstances”.

FORMER OSPREYS COACH Sean Holley has revealed he has turned an offer from Connacht to succeed Eric Elwood as their next coach.

Speaking to BBC Wales Sport, Holley said he was flattered to be offered the chance to take over from Elwood at the end of the 2012-13 season, but ultimately decided against accepting it.

“No head coach position should be taken for granted,” he said. “And I am flattered and honoured to have received the Connacht offer.

“However, my decision is based purely on the timing and my current personal circumstances.”

Holley left Ospreys after nine years last February and has been working as a pundit for the BBC ever since.

He added that he had been tempted by the proposal, and was still interested in returning to coaching in the future.

“The professionalism, vision and drive of the Connacht board in particular has made this a tough decision.

“I remain committed to rugby and am excited about some opportunities that are on the horizon.”
