HOLDERS ST PATRICK’S Athletic proved too good for Shamrock Rovers as they earned a 2-1 victory in tonight’s FAI Cup clash at Richmond Park.
Conan Byrne gave the hosts the lead just after the half-hour mark, as he capitalised on a misplaced pass and produced a superb finish from 18 yards.
The home side’s advantage was doubled just five minutes later, when Jason McGuinness got on the end of Byrne’s corner to head home.
Rovers came close to reducing the deficit in the second half, as substitute Gary McCabe’s attempt was cleared off the line and goalkeeper Brendan Clarke had to be at his best to tip a header over the bar.
Meanwhile, down the other end, the Saints also had chances to add to their advantage, with Aaron Greene twice going close.

McCabe ultimately did find the net on 84 minutes with a fantastic free kick, however, the hosts ultimately held on for the win despite this late scare.
The victory represents a big step as the Saints bid to retain the trophy they lifted, for the first time in 53 years, last May.
