Hillsborough's 25th anniversary marked by 96-minute walk in Phoenix Park today

‘Ireland Walks with the 96′ takes place in Dublin this afternoon.

IRISH FOOTBALL FANS will get their chance to remember the victims of the Hillsborough stadium disaster during an event being held in the Phoenix Park this afternoon.

Ahead of the 25th anniversary of one of the most tragic incidents the sport has ever witnessed, the YNWA Irish Reds supporters’ club are inviting people to ‘Ireland Walks with the 96′ — which will see a 96-minute walk begin at 3.07pm at the Papal Cross today.

When it concludes, 96 balloons will be released and letters from members of family support groups will be read out before a short prayer service and a minute’s silence.

“We’ve got 96 red t-shirts printed which we will give out on the day and we’re hoping everyone else who attends will wear their red colours or whatever football jerseys they want,” Simon Mooney told Liverpool’s website.

We want to get as many people there as possible on the day to mark the 25th anniversary. The idea started when we got talking on forums and the Facebook page online. It’s all just happened in the last two weeks.”
