“Never in my life did I ever think something like this would happen to me,” Irish football legend, Paul McGrath said of his inclusion in the relay today.
“I thought I might have played soccer at the Olympics at some stage but never would have thought I would have done something so special as to carry the torch,” he told RTÉ News.
The torch will stop in the Olympic Council of Ireland offices in Howth for a ceremonial reception before taking in locations like Croke Park — where hurling star Henry Shefflin takes centre-stage – as well as Sheriff Street and St Stephen’s Green.
Up to 40 torchbearers will participate over the course of the day — including Jedward.
“I just hope I can keep it alight for my small leg of the relay. But I’m really privileged and delighted to be a small part of it,” former Irish rugby international Shane Horgan told Samantha Libreri.
