Henderson hails Irish stable lad's €1.2million accumulator foresight

Newly-minted millionaire Conor Murphy is at work today ahead of the Gold Cup despite his good fortune with a €60 bet.

ANYONE WHO’S HAD a flutter this week has dreamed of hitting the big time.

Yesterday, Conor Murphy did just that.

The Irishman, a stable lad in Nicky Henderson’s yard, won £1.2million (€1.4m) on a five-horse accumulator at Cheltenham yesterday.

Today, his boss hailed the “amazing” foresight Murphy showed.  ”Everybody here is absolutely thrilled for him. It was just an amazing piece of foresight last November,” he said.

“Just the chances of all five getting to Cheltenham and all of them running in the right races, that would be long odds, particularly as with Simonsig we didn’t even know what race he would be running in until the other week.

“The chances of them getting there since last November must have been at least 100-1 and the chances of them all winning, that must have been a 1,000,000-1.”

The €60 bet which was placed, got off to a good start when Sprinter Sacre came home in Tuesday’s Arkle. Murphy then had wins from Simonsig in the Neptune Investment Novices’ Hurdle and Bobs Worth in the RSA Chase on Wednesday along with the horse he looks after Finian’s Rainbow in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

And when Riverside Theatre’s took a thrilling Ryanair Chase victory yesterday he was home and hosed.

This morning, Murphy was seen riding out at the crack of dawn for another days’ work as normal.  Jockey Andrew Tinkler, who is attached to Henderson’s yard, joked that he would have headed off on holiday rather than attending morning stables.

He tweeted: “Can’t believe that the million pound man was riding out this morning!!!! I’d be at Heathrow!!”
