A Michalak penalty was the only score of the game before hooker Jean-Charles Orioli crossed in the 30th minute, and Michalak’s try made it 17-0 at the break.
The floodgates opened in the second half though with tries from Joe van Niekirk (2), Davit Kubriashvili, brothers Steffon and Delon Armitage, Rudi Wolf and David Smith handing Sale their worst ever defeat in the competition.
In the Stade Pierre Antoine, Castres Olympique survived a scare before grinding out a 10-8 win against the Glasgow Warriors.
Defending a 13-game winning streak at home, Castres took full advantage when Tom Ryder and Byron McGuigan were sin-binned for Glasgow, driving Yannick Caballero over the line in the 73rd minute.
The win was enough to move Castres above Northampton Saints into second place, three points behind pool leaders Ulster.
